One of the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer, Apple, has added another feature to help its customers know exactly where their near and dear ones are.
Founded in 2008, Coherent Navigation was a small firm that focused on creating commercial navigation services based on partnerships with companies like Boeing and Iridium, the satellite network operator, according to a description on the LinkedIn page of Paul Lego, the company’s former chief executive.
With all the established and dominating Google Maps and Nokia’s HERE maps, Apple will try to make its presence felt in this domain with the new technology. Google is already available for iOS .
Recently, Uber is planning to acquire the Nokia’s HERE maps. Uber has reportedly submitted a bid worth $3 billion (Rs.19,250 Crores). After the recent deal with Microsoft where it sold its handset division, HERE maps was the only worthy rival to Google Maps.

Apple may soon integrate this new technology into its Maps to give a tough competition to its rivals like Google Maps and Nokia’s here maps. Also, it may be integrated into MAC OS and iOS as well.
This acquisition joins that of other start-ups like BroadMap, Embark, HopStop, Locationary that have all, in time played a part in the development of Maps.
This app notably offers an interactive 3D bird’s eye view of cities with voice-guided step-by-step navigation instructions and real-time traffic information.

It is worth mentioning that Google Maps clearly dominates the Maps section in the smartphone sector although it has competitors like Microsoft’s Bing Maps, Nokia’s HERE Maps which offer offline mode as well. Maps app is currently available on MAC OS , but only time will tell how this step of Apple would help them to dominate in the smartphone segment as well.
